PhD project:
Title: The structural, mechanical and biochemical properties of collagenous tissues investigated at the nanoscale.
Aim:The structural tissues of the body consists to a great extend of the protein collagen. Collagen forms long thread like structures called fibrils, which are responsible for load-bearing in soft tissues like tendon, and improves the energy absorption in hard tissues like bone. We have developed a method using atomic force microscopy to test the tensile mechanical properties of individual collagen fibrils, and the aim of the project is to use that method to expand our knowledge of how these fibrils work in the tissues.
